With over 1.5 million engineers graduating every year, this is not hyperbole. However, as the market is saturated, there isn’t enough employment. Indeed, many engineers get paid to write essays for college students without AI. Services like Studybay are cheap and provide the link between experts and learners.

DevOps is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after skills in the tech world. It brings together making apps, setting up cloud infrastructure, and running big systems. Since India is a major player in the global IT industry, this is the best moment for students and engineers alike to focus on this discipline.

Thankfully, there are plenty of prestigious colleges that offer a course in DevOps. Let’s take a look at some of them.

What Is DevOps?

DevOps comes from combining development and operations. The goal is to unify software development and IT operations into a single discipline. This drastically reduces the software development lifecycle while also ensuring the delivery of high-quality software. Key components of DevOps include:

Continuous integration/deployment pipelines

Automation of infrastructure and code testing

Monitoring and logging

Containerisation with tools like Docker and Kubernetes

Cloud Services (AWS, Azure, GCP)

Collaboration between developers, testers, ops, and business teams

In essence, a DevOps engineer automates deployment and ensures fast feedback loops, among other things.

Why Study DevOps?

DevOps is everywhere these days. Apps get built more quickly. Updates roll out in hours, not weeks. This is DevOps in action.

Tech companies want things to move quickly. However, they also want things to work well. DevOps helps with both. It brings developers and operations teams together. They plan, build, test, and release, again and again, without breaking things.

Here’s what makes DevOps worth learning:

You get to work with cool tools like Docker, Jenkins, and Kubernetes.

You learn how to automate boring stuff, builds, tests, and deployments.

You help fix issues before users even notice them.

You become part of real engineering teams, you don’t just code alone.

You’re needed in almost every industry, from banking to gaming.

DevOps is also about thinking differently. You start seeing the whole system, not just your piece of it. You start asking, “What happens when this goes live?” or “Can we make this any faster?”

Jobs? There are lots of them. Good ones too!

DevOps engineers, SREs, and cloud specialists are all in demand, constantly.

DevOps Engineer vs. Software Engineer

Unlike a software engineer, a DevOps specialist doesn’t create software. Instead, they build and maintain the processes that test, integrate, and deploy it. A DevOps engineer might also design the architecture and platform on which the software runs.

Software Engineer

DevOps Engineer

Focus

Code & features

Systems & delivery

Main Skills

Programming, design

Automation, cloud, scripting

Output

New apps/features

CI/CD pipelines, infra setups

Works With

Developers, product teams

Developers, IT, sysadmins

Tools

Code editors, compilers

Cloud, scripts, monitoring

A software engineer deals more with code. They write software from the ground up and, thus, need to specialise in coding. DevOps engineers don’t need to do this.

Top 5 Colleges to Study DevOps in India

India is a large country, and the competition to get into these colleges is cutthroat. You will have to clear the Mains and Advanced to get into 2 of these top 5 institutions. IIIT Hyderabad and BITS have their own entrance exams too, and so does Chandigarh University.

So, the general entrance exams and or GATE alone are not enough.

IIT Bombay

e-Yantra Robotics Suite and BETiC Medical Devices are two of the most popular innovations to emerge from the talents in IIT Bombay. This branch of the IIT offers B.Tech and M.Tech in Computer Science with electives/projects in DevOps, cloud, and CI/CD. It isn’t an outright DevOps programme, but with its strong research labs and collaborations with AWS, Microsoft, and Google, this is a great structure to build engineering foundations on. In fact, it’s the best.

IIT Madras

Kompact AI, CoEs & Robotics, CEWiT Wireless 5G Testbed, and Lab-Grown Diamond R&D are some of the initiatives IIT‑Madras pioneers in. Here, you will find B.Tech/M.Tech in CSE with opportunities in systems engineering, DevOps automation, and cloud computing. Their management and alumni together have built excellent industry tie-ins and hands-on labs with the big leagues, including Google, Microsoft, and Apple.

IIIT Hyderabad

From the Java-based Code Search Engine to the Semiconductor Initiatives, IIIT Hyderabad students have a large canopy of IT sectors to explore. The university has a reputation for frequent and extremely successful start-up spin-offs, combining engineering with entrepreneurship.

Chandigarh University

Comparatively new to the innovation spotlight, the university boasts industry-grade DevOps labs, training with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform. You can study your Bachelor’s in CSE with a DevOps specialisation. Placements here are guaranteed one way or another; if it’s not a job in IBM or Infosys, it’s a corporate tie-in managing live projects and internships with IBM, Microsoft, and other players from day one.

What to Look for in a DevOps Education

Not every course will teach you DevOps the right way. Some just list tools. That’s not enough.

Look for programmes that make you build, repair, and scale things.

Here’s what to keep an eye on:

Curriculum: CI/CD, Git, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, AWS, GCP, and Azure.

Hands-on Work: Capstone projects, mock pipelines, and monitoring dashboards

Faculty: Relevant work experience and updated lesson plans.

Industry Links: Internships, cloud credits, or certification support

Placements: What industry tie-ins does the college have, and what are the successful placement percentages of past students?

Talk to the alumni about their experiences in the college, and ask specific questions about their labs, tool subscriptions for students, and industry exposure.

Final Thoughts

Let’s be realistic for a moment; studying in these top colleges is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. However, it isn’t the end of the road if you don’t clear your Mains or Advanced. There are a number of other colleges and online courses that offer great education at a reasonable price. You will have to figure out placements on your own, but with a strong resume and GIT portfolio, it shouldn’t take long to land a well-paying job in DevOps. Some students also explore platforms like Studybay for academic support—just be sure to use them thoughtfully.

India and engineering go hand-in-hand.
