Read This First

A laptop and a decent internet connection are all most devs need to do their job, so why not sip an expertly-made latte while you’re at it? Coffee shops make for way cozier office alternatives, but working from them safely requires more forethought, especially if you plan on deploying code.

Here are the five main risks working from public spaces like coffee shops come with and how to deal with them.

Unsecured Public Wi-Fi

While it’s great that coffee shops and other venues are free, it’s also an invitation for trouble. HTTPS encryption has done away with most basic hacks, but you can still get tricked if you don’t pay attention.

For example, evil twin attacks are still effective since legitimate Wi-Fi hotspots are easy to duplicate. Connecting to a fake hotspot makes it easier to sniff out and intercept any unencrypted data. Attackers also find it easier to redirect you to fake copies of legitimate websites like GitHub or AWS and then steal your login credentials.

The fix: It’s best to avoid unfamiliar Wi-Fi in public spaces, especially when you’re doing something as sensitive as deploying code. Cellular networks are much harder to tamper with, so it makes more sense to turn your smartphone into a hotspot instead. You can do this abroad just as easily if you’re on an unlimited Global eSIM plan.

Credential Exposure

Deployment requires you to engage with multiple services, from repositories and hosting providers to CI/CD dashboards. Each of these requires an account and an active session to access, and both can be exploited if you don’t have adequate cybersecurity habits.

Password hygiene is a big one since reused credentials potentially open doors to lots of other services, especially if your email address becomes compromised.

The fix: Securing your credentials takes two steps. You’ll first want to make sure that all dev-related accounts use unique and complex passwords. You’ll then want to secure them with some type of MFA to prevent access even if attackers obtain your credentials.

Also, be sure to always log out of any active sessions before leaving if you use public devices in internet cafés or libraries. That way, your account security isn’t at the mercy of the next person who uses the device.

Malware Infection

You can pick up much more than the tab if you carelessly use public Wi-Fi. While some attackers redirect you to more obvious login portals, others may infect your laptop with malware. This is a much subtler approach since modern malware can hide itself and become active long after infection. Running your favorite distro isn’t a complete failsafe anymore either, since Linux malware is on the rise.

The fix: Keep your laptop tidy and safe by installing endpoint protection and get the best antivirus program and regularly run it. Install OS and software updates automatically, and be wary of unfamiliar packages or untrusted scripts.

Shoulder Surfing

Attacks don’t need to be sophisticated to work. Someone from the next table over might simply watch as you work and note any passwords you type in or code that’s currently displayed on the screen.

The fix: Not entering credentials or working on sensitive source code is the best shoulder surfing countermeasure. If that’s not an option, get a corner booth or seat yourself so that the screen is out of view. If you work from coffee shops and other venues frequently, it might be a good idea to get a screen protector, too.

Theft

The worst-case scenario happens when thieves throw subtlety out the window and outright take your devices. Some might do it to get a quick buck. Others may realize that a developer’s laptop is a trove of source code, credentials, and sensitive data.

The fix: Never let your laptop out of sight, even if you’re just going for a refill. Crowded and public spaces are perfect for snatch-and-grabs, so always use a lock to secure your laptop to a table or other sturdy surface.

In Conclusion – Creating a Safe Remote Work Setup

Security also comes from common-sense measures you should use to set up a remote work environment that minimizes risk.

Start by keeping personal accounts and work environments separate from professional ones. It makes access easier to manage while limiting spillover if a personal account ever gets compromised.

Risk-wise, writing code in a coffee shop and deploying it from one aren’t the same thing. Do the latter in safer environments whenever it’s practical.

Keeping as little production data stored locally as possible also makes sense, especially when it comes to minimizing the damage of theft and malware infection.

Finally, you’ll want to have a plan in place in case something goes really wrong. A series of actions to take to contain the damage, like isolating your device, revoking compromised credentials, and letting affected parties know what happened. This helps you react quickly and appropriately so you can get back to normal sooner.

A laptop and a decent internet connection are all most devs need to do their job, so why not sip an expertly-made latte while you’re at it?…

[11138

post-79783","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-best-tools
["GET
