{"id":8293,"date":"2020-01-03T23:41:09","date_gmt":"2020-01-03T23:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devopsschool.com\/blog\/?p=8293"},"modified":"2021-11-15T06:46:29","modified_gmt":"2021-11-15T06:46:29","slug":"chef-terminology-and-definition-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devopsschool.com\/blog\/chef-terminology-and-definition-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Chef Terminology and Definition Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Chef Server<\/strong>: a central server that stores information and manages provisioning of the nodes<\/li><li><strong>Chef Node<\/strong>: an individual server that is managed by a Chef Server<\/li><li><strong>Chef Workstation<\/strong>: a controller machine where the provisionings are created and uploaded to the Chef Server<\/li><li><strong>Recipe<\/strong>: a file that contains a set of instructions (resources) to be executed. A recipe must be contained inside a&nbsp;<em>Cookbook<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Resource<\/strong>: a portion of code that declares an element of the system and what action should be executed. For instance, to install a package we declare a&nbsp;<em>package<\/em>&nbsp;resource with the action&nbsp;<strong>install<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Cookbook<\/strong>: a collection of recipes and other related files organized in a pre-defined way to facilitate sharing and reusing parts of a provisioning<\/li><li><strong>Attributes<\/strong>: details about a specific node. Attributes can be automatic (see next definition) and can also be defined inside recipes<\/li><li><strong>Automatic Attributes<\/strong>: global variables containing information about the system, like network interfaces and operating system (known as&nbsp;<em>facts<\/em>&nbsp;in other tools).
