The CALMS pillar that has had the biggest impact on our DevOps journey is Culture, because it created the foundation that made every other improvement sustainable. Once we aligned development, operations, security, and QA around shared ownership of outcomes (reliability, delivery speed, and customer experience), decisions became faster and handoffs reduced dramatically. This cultural shift enabled better collaboration during planning and incident response, increased trust in automation, and encouraged teams to standardize practices rather than building isolated workflows. As a result, CI/CD adoption accelerated, feedback loops became shorter, and measurement metrics became actionable instead of “reporting only.” In practical terms, Culture improved clarity on responsibilities, reduced friction between teams, and helped us consistently deliver changes with fewer surprises, which ultimately raised both deployment confidence and system stability.
