In my opinion, Site Reliability Engineering is a very strong long-term career path because modern organizations rely heavily on scalable, reliable, and always-available systems, and that demand is only increasing with the growth of cloud computing and distributed architectures. SRE offers a good balance of software engineering and operations, which makes the role both technically challenging and highly valuable, often leading to strong career growth and salary potential. The most important skills to succeed in this field include solid Linux and networking fundamentals, scripting with Python or Bash, experience with cloud platforms, containerization and orchestration tools like Kubernetes, and a good understanding of monitoring, observability, and incident response. Equally important are problem-solving ability, a focus on automation to reduce manual work, and the ability to stay calm and think clearly during production issues. Overall, for anyone interested in working on large-scale systems and improving reliability, SRE is definitely a great long-term career choice.
