Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) earn some of the highest salaries in tech because they are responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and availability of large-scale production systems that directly support business operations and user experiences. Their role requires deep expertise in cloud infrastructure, automation, monitoring, distributed systems, and incident response, along with the ability to quickly resolve complex production issues under pressure and manage on-call responsibilities. Since even small outages can lead to significant financial losses, reputational damage, and customer dissatisfaction, SREs play a critical role in maintaining system stability and performance. In my opinion, the most important factor is the direct business impact of outages, because system downtime directly affects revenue, user trust, and overall business continuity, making reliability a top organizational priority and SRE skills highly valuable.
