Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to a type of AI that possesses the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks, mimicking human cognitive abilities. Unlike current AI technologies, which are designed for specific tasks (such as image recognition, natural language processing, or game playing), AGI can perform any intellectual task that a human can do, including reasoning, problem-solving, and creative thinking. Current AI systems, often referred to as narrow AI, are highly specialized and excel only in predefined areas. In contrast, AGI aims for flexibility and adaptability, making it a more general-purpose intelligence that can autonomously adapt to new situations without requiring reprogramming for each task. This fundamental difference positions AGI as the next frontier in AI, with vast potential but still a long way from realization.
