    "summary": "Learn FinOps as the FinOps Foundation defines it in 2026: FOCUS-based cost data, accurate allocation and unit economics, rate and usage optimisation across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and Kubernetes, and a practice that now spans AI, SaaS, licensing and data centre spend. Built for engineers, analysts and finance partners who want technology spend to be a business decision, not a surprise.",
    "description": "FinOps is an operational framework and cultural practice that maximises the business value of technology, enables timely data-driven decisions and creates financial accountability through collaboration between engineering, finance and business teams. It is not a cost-cutting project. The goal is to spend the right amount on the right things and to know what each unit of spend returns.\n\nThe discipline has broadened fast. The 2026 FinOps Framework update added an Executive Strategy Alignment capability and dedicated guidance for five technology categories: public cloud, SaaS, data centre, data cloud platforms and AI. The State of FinOps 2026 survey found that 98 percent of practitioners now manage AI spend and 90 percent manage SaaS, and FOCUS 1.4, ratified in June 2026, together with native FOCUS exports from AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud, finally makes cost data from different providers comparable.\n\nThe path follows the FinOps lifecycle. You start by building trustworthy visibility and allocation (Inform), move to rate, usage and Kubernetes optimisation (Optimize), and finish by running the practice: forecasting, governance, sustainability, automation and FinOps for AI and the wider Cloud+ scope (Operate). Every stage is hands-on with real billing exports, SQL, OpenCost, policy-as-code and IaC cost estimation, alongside the communication skills a FinOps practitioner needs.\n\nFinOps works closely with CloudOps and platform engineering, who build the guardrails and automation, with DevOps for shift-left cost checks in pipelines, and with MLOps and LLMOps on GPU and token costs. It also intersects IT asset management, IT financial management, ITSM and sustainability teams.",

    "faqs": [
        {
            "q": "What is FinOps, and is it just about cutting cloud costs?",
            "a": "FinOps is an operational framework and cultural practice for maximising the business value of technology spend through collaboration between engineering, finance and business teams. Cost reduction is one outcome, but the real goal is informed trade-offs between cost, speed and quality, which sometimes means spending more on things that earn more."
        },
        {
            "q": "Do I need a finance or accounting background to work in FinOps?",
            "a": "No. Many practitioners come from engineering, operations or data roles and learn the finance basics (budgets, amortisation, forecasting, chargeback) on the job. What matters most is understanding how cloud services are priced and used and being able to explain cost in terms both engineers and finance accept."
        },
        {
            "q": "Which FinOps certification should I start with?",
            "a": "Start with the FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) from the FinOps Foundation, or a hands-on programme such as DevOpsSchool's FinOps course if you prefer instructor-led learning. Engineers should then take FinOps Certified Engineer, analysts the FOCUS Analyst, and anyone handling AI budgets the AI Value certification; FinOps Certified Professional comes after real practice experience."
        },
        {
            "q": "What is FOCUS and why does it matter?",
            "a": "FOCUS, the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification, is an open schema for billing data so costs from AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, SaaS and other providers can be analysed together with the same columns and definitions. Version 1.4 was ratified in June 2026, and the major clouds now offer native FOCUS exports, which removes most of the custom normalisation work FinOps teams used to do."
        },
        {
            "q": "How does FinOps apply to AI and GPU spend?",
            "a": "The same capabilities apply, from allocation and unit economics to forecasting and rate optimisation, but the units change to tokens, inference requests and GPU hours, and prices and models change quickly. FinOps for AI focuses on attributing AI spend to products, measuring cost per outcome and guiding choices such as model size, caching and provisioned versus on-demand capacity."
        },
        {
            "q": "Do I need a commercial FinOps platform?",
            "a": "Not to start. Native tools from AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, FOCUS exports, SQL, OpenCost and open-source reference dashboards cover a lot of ground. Commercial platforms add multi-cloud normalisation, automation and workflow at scale, and you will evaluate them far better once you have built the basics yourself."
        },
        {
            "q": "How long does it take to become job-ready in FinOps?",
            "a": "At about 8 hours a week this path takes roughly six months. Engineers with cloud experience often reach a junior FinOps role after the first three stages, while the optimisation, Kubernetes and AI stages prepare you for FinOps engineer and lead roles."
