You can place a small template in a quoted/heredoc string, or put a larger one in a UTF-8
.tftpl
file and render it with
templatefile()
.

A template is not a Terraform module. A module groups Terraform configuration that defines infrastructure. A template is a way to generate text such as application config, shell scripts, HTML, cloud-init or EC2 user data. Generating a string alone creates no cloud resources.

Item

Role

Example

Variable

Holds typed input

var.environment = "dev"

Interpolation

Inserts a value

"server-${var.environment}"

.tftpl
file

Holds reusable formatted text

templates/app.conf.tftpl

templatefile()

Renders an external template with supplied values

templatefile("...", { environment = var.environment })

Terraform module

Groups infrastructure configuration

module "network" { ... }
— not taught here

When not to use a template: A single string is often clearer as
"prefix-${var.name}"
.
