Building an online casino sounds like one of those jobs where you can throw up a website, add some slots and wait for players to arrive. Sadly, it’s a bit more involved than that.
There’s the licence, the casino platform, game suppliers, payments, security, customer support and a whole pile of rules to deal with. You also need a brand people can trust. So where do you actually start?
1. Pick Your Market
The first decision is where you want to operate.
This matters because online gambling rules are different from one country or territory to another. A casino aimed at UK players, for example, has a very different regulatory setup from one aimed at players elsewhere.
Your target market will influence the licence you need, the games you can offer, payment methods, advertising rules and even some of the features available on the site.
So don’t build everything first and worry about regulation later. Decide where you want to operate at the beginning.
2. Choose Your Casino Platform
Next comes the technology.
You can build a casino platform yourself, but that means developing and maintaining a huge amount of software. For a new operator, a white-label or turnkey platform can be a much simpler route.
The platform can provide the basic casino infrastructure, back-office tools, player accounts, payments and other essential functions. Some providers also offer access to game suppliers and regulatory support, and this offers every online casino games site the perfect way to get the site up and running fast.
3. Sort Out the Licence
There’s no getting around this one, you’ll need a gambling licence from the relevant regulator before you can legally offer casino games to customers in a particular regulated market. This is one area where specialist legal and regulatory advice is well worth considering, as the exact requirements depend on the jurisdiction.
And whatever market you choose, there will be paperwork, lots of paperwork. The application process can involve checking the company, owners, finances, policies, technical systems and people running the business. And you’ll also need processes covering things such as customer verification, anti-money laundering and responsible gambling.
4. Add the Games
Now you need something for people to actually play.
That usually means connecting your casino platform with game providers through integrations. Slots will probably make up a large part of the lobby, but you might also want table games, live casino and other formats.
Don’t just look at the number of games available. Check which providers are supported in your target market and whether their content is licensed and approved for that jurisdiction.
5. Set Up Payments
Players need a straightforward way to deposit and withdraw money.
That means choosing payment providers and making sure the system works with your target market and currency. Card payments, bank transfers and various alternative payment methods may all be options.
This part also links closely with verification and fraud prevention. You need to know who your customers are and have suitable checks in place.
6. Build the Brand and Website
Choose the name, logo, colours and general style of the casino, then build a website that makes finding games and managing an account reasonably painless.
Mobile matters too, in fact, as much or more than desktop. A site that looks great on a desktop but falls apart on a just is not going to hack it.
7. Test Everything
Before launch, test the lot.
Registration, verification, deposits, withdrawals, games, bonuses, customer support, mobile pages and account management all need checking.
You don’t want your first real customers discovering that the withdrawal button doesn’t work.
