What is Online?

Online instructor-led training is live, scheduled technical teaching delivered over a conferencing platform with hands-on work happening in parallel — not recorded video, and not a webinar. The distinction matters because the failure modes are completely different. A recorded course fails when the content is wrong. An online live session fails when the trainer cannot see that half the group has been stuck on step four for twenty minutes.

What actually makes it work is a small number of concrete mechanisms. A platform configured deliberately — breakout rooms, chat that someone is watching, screen sharing at a resolution where terminal text is legible, recording that starts automatically. A lab environment every attendee can reach on the first morning, which is the single most common point of failure, usually because corporate laptops block what the labs need. A rhythm that alternates short demonstration with hands-on work rather than an hour of slides. A second channel — a persistent chat space — where questions accumulate without interrupting. And explicit checkpoints, because in an online session silence means nothing at all.

The organisational side is equally practical. Sessions have to be scheduled across timezones without one region always taking the unpleasant slot, split across days rather than run as an eight-hour block, recorded and hosted so absentees and the rest of the organisation can use them, and assessed so somebody can report whether the training worked. Getting those right is what separates online delivery that produces measurable capability from online delivery that produces attendance.

Why this skill matters now

Distributed engineering teams are now the default rather than the exception, and the training that supports them has had to follow. A team of twenty spread across four countries cannot be brought together for a week, and increasingly there is no budget to try — so the choice is between live remote delivery and self-paced video that most people never finish.

The quality gap between those two options is large and widening. Live remote training done well produces better outcomes than in-person for technical subjects, because every attendee works on their own machine in their own environment, everything is recorded, and the chat channel captures questions people would never ask out loud. Done badly it produces an eight-hour video call with muted cameras and nothing learned. The difference is almost entirely mechanical: lab access, session length, checkpoint discipline and facilitation.

Most organisations also run far more internal enablement than they realise. Onboarding, platform adoption, migration training, security awareness, brown-bag sessions and internal certification are all training, usually delivered by engineers who were handed a deck and no method. Teaching those people how remote instructor-led delivery actually works is one of the cheapest capability investments an engineering organisation can make.

Frequently asked

Is this a course about a subject, or about how to teach one?
About how to deliver one remotely. It assumes you already know your subject. If what you want is subject training delivered online, every course we run is available in exactly that format — this page is for people who deliver training themselves.
How is live online delivery different from a recorded course?
Completely. Recorded video is a content product with no feedback loop. Live online delivery is scheduled, interactive and hands-on, with the trainer adjusting to what the group is actually struggling with. Both have a place; this course is about the live format.
Our attendees are behind a corporate proxy and cannot install anything. What then?
That is the most common blocker and it has a whole module. Options include browser-based environments, cloud development environments, attendee-provisioned cloud accounts and pre-approved container images — plus a pre-flight check that discovers the problem a week early instead of on the first morning.
How do you keep people engaged when cameras are off?
By replacing what you used to read from the room with explicit mechanisms: frequent checkpoints, hands-on work every twenty to thirty minutes, polls, a monitored chat channel, and breakout rooms. Silence in an online session is not a signal, so you build signals in deliberately.
How do you handle three timezones in one cohort?
Either a rotating overlap window so no region always draws the worst slot, or split cohorts with the same trainer and identical material. The scheduling module works both through with real constraints, including release freezes and public holidays.
What do you do about a group with very mixed skill levels?
Design for it rather than discover it. Pre-course assessment, tiered exercises with a defined core and optional extension, pairing stronger attendees with weaker ones in breakouts, and a lab assistant handling stragglers so the main session keeps moving.
Do you provide recordings for the courses you deliver?
Yes. Sessions are recorded and available in the LMS, and attendees keep LMS access for a year. For public cohorts, a missed session can be picked up in a later batch.
Can this be delivered onsite?
Yes, which is only mildly ironic. Private batches run onsite at your premises, live online, or hybrid. Bringing an internal training team together in person to learn remote delivery works well, and the labs then simulate distributed conditions.
What size are batches?
Private corporate batches run 8 to 30 people. Public Live & Interactive cohorts are capped at 10 so everyone gets time with the trainer. For a delivery-skills course the smaller end is strongly preferable, because everyone teaches.
What lab environment do we need?
Attendees provision their own environment — a conferencing account they can configure, plus free-tier cloud or local containers for the lab-access module — and we walk them through it. The setup they build is the one they keep teaching with.
Do attendees get a certificate?
Yes — every attendee receives a completion certificate, verifiable at devopsschool.com/certificates. Corporate batches also receive an attendance and assessment report.
What is your refund position?
