What is Scala with Spark?
Apache Spark is a distributed processing engine; Scala is the language it is written in and the one that exposes its API most directly. Work is expressed as transformations on distributed datasets, and Spark builds an execution plan, partitions the work and runs it across a cluster. DataFrames and the Catalyst optimiser mean much of the tuning is done for you — until it is not. What determines whether a Spark job finishes is usually partitioning and shuffles. A job that works on a sample and dies on the full dataset is almost always shuffling more data than it needs to, or skewed onto one partition.
Why it's in demand now
Data volumes have outgrown single-machine processing in most organisations of any size, and Spark remains the common answer for batch and streaming at scale. The valuable skill is performance: reading a query plan, recognising a skewed join, and fixing a job that takes six hours when it should take twenty minutes.
