What is SEO?

SEO — search engine optimisation — is the practice of making a site discoverable, understandable and preferable to search engines so that it earns organic traffic without paying per click. It is not a marketing activity bolted onto a website; it is a property of how the site is built, structured, served and written, which is why the work splits between engineering and content and rarely succeeds when only one of those is involved.

The discipline has three layers. Technical SEO governs whether a page can be reached and indexed at all: robots directives, status codes, canonicalisation, redirect chains, XML sitemaps, JavaScript rendering, pagination, crawl budget on large sites, and site speed as measured by Core Web Vitals. On-page and content SEO governs whether the page deserves to rank for a query: matching search intent rather than a keyword string, information architecture and internal linking, title and heading structure, and the experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust signals search quality guidelines describe. Off-page SEO governs external corroboration — links earned through genuinely useful work and digital PR rather than bought from a directory.

Modern SEO also has to account for how results are presented. A query may return featured snippets, People Also Ask panels, image and video packs, local results, product grids and AI-generated summaries before a conventional blue link. Structured data using schema.org markup is how a site describes itself in terms those surfaces can consume, and measurement in Google Search Console has to be read against that reality rather than against a simple ranking position.

Why this skill matters now

Organic search is still the largest source of trackable, non-paid traffic for most businesses, and it is the one channel whose cost does not scale linearly with volume. That makes it the obvious place to invest when paid acquisition costs rise, which they consistently have.

At the same time, the ground moved. Search results now include AI-generated answers and expanded features that absorb clicks that used to reach sites, which has changed which queries are worth pursuing and which are not. Helpful-content and spam updates repeatedly removed traffic from sites built on thin, mass-produced pages, and the arrival of cheap generative writing made that failure mode far more common. Meanwhile Core Web Vitals turned a share of the ranking discussion into a genuine front-end engineering problem measured with field data, not opinion.

The result is that the profile of a valuable SEO practitioner changed. Keyword stuffing and directory submissions have been dead for over a decade; what pays now is somebody who can read a log file and prove what a crawler actually fetched, diagnose why a JavaScript-rendered route never gets indexed, fix a largest contentful paint regression with the front-end team, design an information architecture and internal linking model, mark up entities correctly, and tell an executive honestly which traffic loss was an algorithm update and which was a deployment.

How is this different from your SEM training?
Different discipline entirely. SEO is organic — crawlability, rendering, Core Web Vitals, content quality, structured data and authority, where results build slowly and persist. SEM is paid — auction mechanics, bidding, ad creative and conversion tracking, where visibility stops with the budget. Teams that need both usually take SEO first.
Is this technical or content focused?
Both, weighted towards technical because that is where the diagnosable, high-impact problems live. Roughly half the course is crawl, render, index and performance work; the rest is intent research, content quality, structured data, authority and measurement.
Do we need developer involvement to apply this?
For most technical fixes, yes — and the course is designed for that. It teaches you to produce evidence and write tickets a developer will accept rather than to hand over a generic recommendation list. Mixed batches of marketers and developers work particularly well.
Has AI in search results made SEO obsolete?
It has changed which queries are worth pursuing and lowered click-through on some informational terms. It has not changed the fundamentals of being crawlable, fast, well structured and worth citing. The course covers how AI summaries and expanded SERP features change query selection and measurement.
Can the agenda be customised for our stack?
Yes — that is the normal case for a private batch. We look at your CMS or framework, whether you are ecommerce, publisher, SaaS or lead generation, and rebuild the modules and labs around your own site and Search Console data.
Do you cover site migrations?
Yes, in the specialist module, and it can be expanded into a dedicated day. Migrations are the single most expensive way to lose organic traffic, so the material covers redirect mapping, staging validation, phased launch and rollback criteria.

How long does a private SEO batch take?
