What is Prometheus with Grafana?
Prometheus scrapes metrics from instrumented targets, stores them as time series, and evaluates rules over them; Grafana queries that store and renders it. The concepts to internalise are the four metric types, labels and cardinality, and PromQL — particularly rate, histogram_quantile and aggregation, which is where most real queries live. Cardinality is the trap. A label with unbounded values will quietly destroy a Prometheus server, and the discipline of choosing labels carefully is more important than any dashboard technique.
Why it's in demand now
This pair is the default open-source monitoring stack, and instrumentation has moved from an operations concern to something engineers are expected to build into their own services. Employers increasingly ask for SLO thinking — error budgets, burn-rate alerts — rather than dashboards, and that requires being fluent in PromQL rather than in clicking Grafana.
