You can easily view and edit Google Sheets (GSheet) files offline on both Windows and macOS by enabling Google Drive’s built-in offline mode. There are multiple methods to achieve this, depending on your needs and browser setup.
Method 1: Use Google Chrome (Recommended)
This is the most stable and Google-supported way for both Windows and macOS.
Steps:
- Open Google Chrome and sign in to your Google account.
- Go to Google Drive Settings (drive.google.com/drive/settings).
- Enable the option “Create, open, and edit your recent Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files on this device while offline.”
- Install the Google Docs Offline Chrome extension if prompted.
- To make specific files offline, right-click them in Drive and select “Available offline.”
- Once offline, visit sheets.google.com in Chrome — your saved files will open and sync automatically when back online.
Method 2: Use Drive for Desktop App
This method works across browsers and allows offline file access directly from your file explorer or Finder.
Steps:
- Download and install Google Drive for Desktop from the Google Drive website.
- Sign in and open the Drive settings.
- Enable “Make all files available offline” or selectively choose folders/files.
- Access offline files via File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) under Google Drive → My Drive.
- When internet returns, files automatically sync changes.
Method 3: Manual File Download
If you prefer a traditional approach or don’t want to enable sync:
Steps:
- Open your Google Sheet online.
- Navigate to File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx).
- Save and edit it locally using Excel, WPS Office, or LibreOffice.
- When ready, re-upload to Google Drive if needed.
This method works completely offline but loses live-sync features.
Method 4: Offline Access on Safari (Mac)
While Chrome is recommended, macOS users can use Safari with Drive for Desktop.
Steps:
- Install Google Drive for Desktop.
- Make files available offline using Finder.
- Open them directly with the Google Sheets app once connected again; updates will sync automatically.
Key Notes
- Offline mode cannot be enabled in Incognito/private browsing.
- You must be connected at least once to sync recent files.
- Large Sheets with complex formulas or scripts may not sync properly offline
