Is Automating Risk Assessment in Healthcare IT Systems a Good Idea?

In the world of healthcare IT, risk assessment has become more critical than ever. With increasing reliance on digital platforms for patient records, diagnostics, and compliance reporting, any misstep in identifying risks can have dire consequences, not just technologically, but legally and ethically. 

So, while automation promises speed and accuracy, it also brings challenges, especially when lives and lawsuits are on the line. Could better systems flag risks earlier? Industry trends suggest so. According to data from Precedence Research, automation for healthcare already has a market size of $46.85 billion. By 2034, it’s predicted to hit $110.47 billion. 

There’s clearly plenty of potential in this field, so today, let’s explore the upsides, the pitfalls, and the smartest way forward.

Firstly, The Benefits That We Might See

In environments where thousands of patient records and medical processes flow through digital systems every hour, automation enables real-time analysis. This would be impossible for human teams to manage. Automation offers us tools that integrate into CI/CD pipelines that would continuously monitor for anomalies, security gaps, or compliance violations. 

This is a critical need when you consider that in 2023, there were 725 reported data breaches in the healthcare sector. These leaks exposed over 124 million health records, making it the worst year on record for such incidents.

Another benefit is consistency. Human analysts might miss red flags due to fatigue or cognitive bias, whereas an automated system applies the same logic to every dataset. When properly trained, algorithms can detect patterns linked to fraud, data breaches, or adverse reactions, sometimes long before they manifest into real-world issues. 

Just look at the early signs of complications that later became central in the Depo shot lawsuit cases. They might have been identified sooner through pattern recognition systems. However, today, Pfizer is being sued and facing over 289 active cases because of the apparent risk of brain tumors from their shot.

The Kinks That We May Need to Iron Out

Despite the potential, automating risk assessment in healthcare is not without serious concerns. First, automated systems lack context. A machine can flag anomalies, but it might not understand the full clinical or legal implications. For example, it may miss nuances that a human risk assessor would notice, such as a side effect that’s dangerous but pales in comparison to another avoidable risk.  

Similarly, data dependency is another major limitation. If your system is only as good as the data it’s trained on, then poor data can lead to false negatives or positives. Studies also back this up. A 2023 report found that incomplete datasets in electronic health records had the potential to lead to biased predictions. 

This was particularly the case when data were missing non-randomly (e.g., due to differences in healthcare access). The study noted that only about half of ML studies properly account for missing data, which can indeed skew model performance.

DevOps teams in healthcare must design risk assessment pipelines that include checkpoints for expert review. For instance, automated alerts about potential drug interactions or unusual patient responses can be routed to medical teams for confirmation. This hybrid model helps avoid both false alarms and missed signals.

It’s also crucial to build explainability into AI systems. Tools that clearly show why they flagged something as risky can help professionals make informed choices and defend those decisions if challenged.

A report by the OECD found that at least 163,000 deaths were caused by medical errors in Europe in 2023. They also found that 30% of such medical errors seem to be triggered by communication failures. If AI and automation have a shot at bringing those numbers down, it’s well worth the investment. 

One thing’s for sure, though: whoever manages to address the challenges behind automation is going to be incredibly wealthy in the years to come.
