This guide updates a brief legacy Jira install note into a practical Linux runbook for DevOps and system administrators. You will learn a safer install workflow, how to control Jira as a service, and how to allow network access without disabling your firewall.

Use official Jira sources first
Jira installation steps and prerequisites vary by release. Always confirm the exact instructions for your target version in Atlassian documentation before running production installs.
- Jira download page from the original post: https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/download?b=j
- Atlassian reference from the original post: Installing Jira on Linux (Confluence)
- Original historical access example (not reusable as-is): http://uvo1kievugg76unbcj9.vm.cld.sr:8080/
Prepare the Linux host before installation
Before installing, define your runtime choices (hostname, port, service model, and database strategy) and validate OS-level access controls.
- Use a dedicated Linux host (or VM) with stable DNS/IP.
- Use a privileged account only when needed; prefer least privilege for routine operations.
- Confirm inbound access policy for Jira web port (commonly 8080 unless changed in installer).
- Plan persistence and backups for Jira home/data directories and database.
Install Jira with the Linux binary installer
The original post used Jira 6.4.12 as an example. Keep it only as a historical reference; for real deployments, use a currently supported release from Atlassian.
Historical command pattern from the original article
wget https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/downloads/binary/atlassian-jira-6.4.12-x64.bin
chmod +x atlassian-jira-6.4.12-x64.bin
sudo ./atlassian-jira-6.4.12-x64.binCode language: JavaScript (javascript)
Generic installer flow for current releases
wget -O atlassian-jira.bin "https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/download?b=j"
chmod +x atlassian-jira.bin
sudo ./atlassian-jira.binCode language: JavaScript (javascript)
When the console wizard starts, follow prompts for installation path, application home, port, and whether to install Jira as a service.

Manage Jira service after installation
Service commands depend on your distribution and how Jira was installed. The service name is often jira, but verify on your host.
| Init system | Start | Stop | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| systemd | systemctl start jira | systemctl stop jira | systemctl status jira |
| SysV init | service jira start | service jira stop | service jira status |
# systemd example
sudo systemctl start jira
sudo systemctl status jira
sudo systemctl stop jiraCode language: PHP (php)
# SysV example
sudo service jira start
sudo service jira status
sudo service jira stopCode language: PHP (php)
Allow web access without disabling the firewall
The original note suggested stopping iptables. For production, do not disable your firewall globally. Open only the Jira port you need.
| Firewall tool | Example allow rule for 8080/tcp | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| firewalld | firewall-cmd –add-port=8080/tcp –permanent | Reload required after permanent change. |
| ufw | ufw allow 8080/tcp | Common on Debian/Ubuntu. |
| iptables | iptables -A INPUT -p tcp –dport 8080 -j ACCEPT | Persistence method varies by distro. |
# firewalld
sudo firewall-cmd --add-port=8080/tcp --permanent
sudo firewall-cmd --reloadCode language: PHP (php)
# ufw
sudo ufw allow 8080/tcpCode language: PHP (php)
Complete web setup and verify Jira is reachable
After the service is running and firewall rules are in place, open Jira in a browser from an authorized client.
http://your-server-or-dns:8080Code language: JavaScript (javascript)
- Confirm the setup page loads.
- Complete Jira application configuration prompts.
- Create or connect admin credentials.
- Validate service restart behavior after host reboot.
Common pitfalls and best practices
- Do not rely on obsolete version URLs for production installs.
- Do not disable firewall services just to make Jira reachable.
- Document your chosen service management commands for your distro.
- Pin and test backup/restore procedures before go-live.
- Keep all Jira install and upgrade actions aligned with official Atlassian docs for your exact release.
