Automating SVN Tagging, Branching, and Export with Apache Ant (SVN Ant)

Originally published on 2009-10-06; fully revised and updated.

If your team still uses Subversion, SVN Ant tasks let you automate repetitive repository operations directly from your Ant build. This walkthrough is for build and release engineers who want predictable, scriptable tag, branch, and export actions with shared properties and reusable targets.

SVN tasks with Ant

When this pattern is useful

This approach is useful when you already have Ant-based CI/CD jobs and want SVN operations to run as first-class build targets instead of ad-hoc shell scripts. The original post’s environment used ANT 1.7.0, SVN Ant 1.1-rc3, and Subversion 1.4.0.

Dependencies and repository assumptions

The examples below assume a standard SVN layout per project: trunk, tags, and branches.

Define shared SVN properties in build.properties

Keep repository location, project base path, and naming inputs in one properties file so each target can reuse them.

# SVN connection and structure
svn.repository.url=http://xyz.com/repos/somereponame
svn.project.base.path=someprojectname
svn.username=your_svn_username
svn.password=your_svn_password

# Release/tag input
tag.name=SOME_TAG_NAME_12222008

# Branch input
new.branch.name=NEW_BRANCH_12222008Code language: PHP (php)

Create reusable targets in svn-tasks.xml

This structure loads SVN Ant, validates availability, and then exposes dedicated targets for tagging, branching, and export.

<project name='svn-tasks' default='tool-availability'>
    <property file='build.properties' />

    <property name='svn.base.url' value='${svn.repository.url}/${svn.project.base.path}' />
    <property name='svnant.lib.dir' location='svn-ant-lib' />
    <property name='svnant.javahl' value='false' />
    <property name='svnant.svnkit' value='true' />

    <path id='svnant.classpath'>
        <fileset dir='${svnant.lib.dir}'>
            <include name='**/*.jar' />
        </fileset>
    </path>

    <typedef resource='org/tigris/subversion/svnant/svnantlib.xml' classpathref='svnant.classpath' />

    <target name='tool-availability'>
        <available resource='org/tigris/subversion/svnant/svnantlib.xml'
                   classpathref='svnant.classpath'
                   property='available.svnant' />
        <echo message='SVN-ANT is available = ${available.svnant}' />
    </target>

    <target name='does-svnant-exist' depends='tool-availability'>
        <fail unless='available.svnant'>SVN-ANT is not available.</fail>
    </target>

    <target name='svntag' depends='does-svnant-exist'>
        <property name='src.url' value='${svn.base.url}/${project.name}/trunk/' />
        <property name='dest.url' value='${svn.base.url}/${project.name}/tags/${tag.name}' />
        <svn javahl='${svnant.javahl}' svnkit='${svnant.svnkit}' username='${svn.username}' password='${svn.password}'>
            <copy srcUrl='${src.url}' destUrl='${dest.url}' message='Tagging ${project.name} as ${tag.name}' />
        </svn>
    </target>

    <target name='svnbranch' depends='does-svnant-exist'>
        <property name='src.url' value='${svn.base.url}/${project.name}/trunk/' />
        <property name='dest.url' value='${svn.base.url}/${project.name}/branches/${new.branch.name}' />
        <svn javahl='${svnant.javahl}' svnkit='${svnant.svnkit}' username='${svn.username}' password='${svn.password}'>
            <copy srcUrl='${src.url}' destUrl='${dest.url}' message='Branch ${project.name} to ${new.branch.name}' />
        </svn>
    </target>

    <target name='svnexport' depends='does-svnant-exist'>
        <property name='src.url' value='${svn.base.url}/${project.name}/tags/${tag.name}' />
        <svn javahl='${svnant.javahl}' svnkit='${svnant.svnkit}' username='${svn.username}' password='${svn.password}'>
            <export srcUrl='${src.url}' destPath='${dest.path}/${project.name}' />
        </svn>
    </target>
</project>Code language: HTML, XML (xml)

Tag vs branch vs export

TargetSVN Ant operationTypical sourceTypical destinationResult
svntagcopy…/project/trunk/…/project/tags/${tag.name}Creates a repository tag path
svnbranchcopy…/project/trunk/…/project/branches/${new.branch.name}Creates a new branch path
svnexportexport…/project/tags/${tag.name}${dest.path}/${project.name}Exports files to local filesystem (no working copy metadata)

Run the targets from the command line

Use -D flags to pass or override values at runtime (for example, project.name, tag.name, and dest.path).

# Verify SVN Ant can be loaded
ant -f svn-tasks.xml does-svnant-exist

# Create a tag from trunk
ant -f svn-tasks.xml svntag \
  -Dproject.name=my-app \
  -Dtag.name=REL_2026_10_12

# Create a branch from trunk
ant -f svn-tasks.xml svnbranch \
  -Dproject.name=my-app \
  -Dnew.branch.name=hotfix_2026_10

# Export a tagged build to local disk
ant -f svn-tasks.xml svnexport \
  -Dproject.name=my-app \
  -Dtag.name=REL_2026_10_12 \
  -Ddest.path=/tmp/releasesCode language: PHP (php)

Common pitfalls and best practices

  • Avoid storing real SVN credentials in VCS-tracked build.properties; inject them from CI secrets or local ignored files.
  • Fail fast with a tool-availability target so jobs do not partially execute.
  • Use immutable, descriptive tag names (for example release and date/build number).
  • Validate that every project actually uses trunk/tags/branches before reusing these paths.
  • Log source and destination URLs for traceability during release automation.
